Upset fans say racial slurs were yelled during Monessen/Brentwood basketball game
High school basketball fans are upset after what they call an offensive display during a Monessen/Brentwood basketball game.
“As soon as I got to the game and saw the banana costumes, I knew it was going to be trouble,” said spectator Megan Kearns.
Kearns, a Monessen native and high school basketball fanatic, could not have been more right about the showdown between the Greyhounds and Spartans at Brentwood high school on Friday.
Parents say the students took center court and began chanting racial slurs while dancing around their rival's mostly African American players
“I was appalled and shocked. I was like, ‘I can’t believe they’re doing that, and they didn’t do anything about it,’” said parent Terri Payne.
“Their players were yelling at our players, calling them monkeys and cotton pickers,” said Kearns.
Ron Dufalla, superintendent of the Brentwood School District, released this statement:
"There was in incident at Friday's game that was dealt with when it occurred. I think it was addressed quickly and handled well."
Some disagree.
“It was disgusting, and the district and the student body should be ashamed,” said Kearns.
Channel 11 was told that Brentwood is reviewing its school policy to make sure a similar incident doesn’t happen again. The school also said that the three students involved have been disciplined.
